A Hat for Him

We spent another weekend hunkered up inside the house, but, actually, I did not mind at all.  It poured all day Saturday, and with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees the roads were covered in ice.  It felt quite balmy, actually, after having weeks of below zero temperatures. Although it was icy, we welcomed the warmer temperatures, and I welcomed the opportunity to rest.  I had been feeling quite tired and run down, and Hubby decided that he was going to take over on Saturday, not allowing me to do anything except take it easy. I had plans to take the Christmas tree down and pack away the ornaments and the few other decorations that we still have up, but Hubby wouldn't hear of it.  He wanted me to take the day off, and I was so tired that I didn't even try putting up a fight, which is rare for me.  I often push myself too hard, trying to accomplish more than is necessary, and it's not very often that I will sit when there is work to be done. Hubby was insistent that I took the entire day to rest.  He cooked, cleaned, changed diapers, and kept up with very active toddlers, as well as doing the barn chores and keeping the fires going.  I knew I needed to take his advice.  I was snappy, intolerant and grumpy.  I wasn't doing anyone any good, and unless I took a little break, things weren't going to get better.  I succumbed to sitting under a blanket, drinking tea and working on my new knitting project all day, not even flinching when the play-dough was taken out and played with on the landing of the stairs.

After finishing the chevron scarf, I was anxious to learn knitting-in-the-round.  I chose a simple beanie pattern and set to work on a hat for Hubby. My first attempt had to be pulled out because I didn't have my gauge right, but once I found the right size needles, I was on my way again.  I used a black worsted weight merino and am quite pleased with the results.  At first I didn't think I cared for knitting-in-the-round using double pointed needles.  I was having a hard time maneuvering them, and it took me a bit to get used to ribbing with all the extra needles pointing everywhere. I eventually got the hang of it, and then I actually began to enjoy it.  Once I was past the ribbing and onto the stockinette, I started having fun.  I could drink tea and have a conversation without the fear of making a mistake.  With all the time spent resting, I was able to finish Hubby's hat and even start one for myself. Hubby was quite excited about his new hat...almost like a baby with a new toy.  Even though the temperatures were in the 40's the next day, which felt like a heat wave, Hubby wore his hat all day (even in the house). It felt so good to make something that was so well appreciated.  So, I guess, even though I was resting, I was still able to accomplish something.

  1. It looks great! Double pointed needles freaked me out at first, but now, like you said, they are fun! Glad you had a a little time to just relax and be.

  2. One of the first things that I made (after about 3 scarves) was a hat for my husband. I bought some natural colored wool from the local farmer's market and made a two tone hat - brown for the ribbing and then a natural tan for the rest of the hat. Three years later, it is still his go-to hat and it looks just as good as when I made it. Isn't it great to have men that appreciate the things we make for them?

  4. Thanks for coming over and saying hi. I'm glad that you managed to have a day off. What a thoughtful husband you have. I had similar problem with circular needles, it took me a little while to get going. The hat looks really good, obviously well appreciated.
Take care and don't work too hard.

  7. Hi there! I just found your blog via Ginny's yarn-along post. I LOVE your blog. I've spent the last 45 minutes or so just browsing back through your posts. Your new "old" farmhouse amazes me. I can't believe that you built it new. It looks like an old, classic New England farmhouse. I am very impressed! :) I'm excited to follow along with your posts now.

    1. I'm honored that you stopped by and spent so much time browsing. I do hope you will come back. I love old houses, and always dreamed of owning one...for now we are creating our own "old" house. I still dream of owning a real old farmhouse and fixing it up, though. ;)

  9. I have had that hat in my Ravelry library. Seeing it finished, I will have to try it soon. Glad you finished it while "resting". Sometimes we just have to take care of ourselves or we really can't take care of anything.

  10. Our tree was still up last weekend and I am glad I am not the only one! It stayed up because my husband had the flu but my cat decided it needed to come down Tuesday morning. What a way to wake up...

    1. Oh, goodness...what a mess that must have been! Thankfully we haven't had that happen to us yet, but I'm sure it will someday. For now, the kitties simply enjoy knocking the bulbs off the tree and batting them around the floor (and breaking a few in the process).

  11. You are so blessed to have such a wonderful husband who recognizes when you need alone time. I'm sure you don't get very much of that!! I've been feeling that way lately as well. Just a day to refuel my Mama tank would be perfect for me also. Hopefully, it will happen soon. : ) The hat is wonderful and you have quite the handsome hubby to wear it!! : ) xo
