Knitting Update

small package of yarn arrived in the mail this past weekend...lovely lark in Bird's Egg Blue and Dogwood. The package was a much needed distraction to the weekend's difficulties, such cute little bundles in the softest shades of blue and pink. I was immediately drawn to Quince and Co. because of the simplicity of their website and their yarn selections, and how could I not be charmed by the fact that they used bird names for their yarns...finch, chickadee, osprey, tern, owl, etc....I love it!  I chose lark for my newest project, an in threes cardigan.  I would like to make one for each of my two youngest girls, possibly with coordinating calico dresses for Easter.  I cast on the first sweater on Sunday, and I am past the little cap sleeves and on to, what I am calling, the home stretch. This is my first attempt at a sweater, and I am finding the pattern simple to follow, and I like that I can work on it while the Littles are around.  The only issue I am having is with my needles.  I am using bamboo circulars, and the cord keeps twisting, curling, and bending where it attaches to the needle, and the stitches don't slide very easily from the cord onto the needle.  I love my bamboo dps, but I'm not so sure I like the bamboo circulars.  I am wondering if it is just the particular bamboos that I have, if others would work better, or if I need to try something completely different.  Metal maybe?  The choices are overwhelming, and I'm not sure where to begin.  What circulars do you prefer to use?  I would love any suggestions you care to offer.

I learned how to make a center pull ball of yarn using this handy tutorial. I know this is nothing new to anyone who has been knitting for a while, but I was so proud of myself when I wound my first ball and pulled the string to find out that it actually worked.  No more run away balls!!!  I want to buy more yarn just so I can wind more balls.  I know there are other methods, but using my thumb and the back of two chairs worked great for me.  So, that is my little knitting update. I hope you are all having a great week.

  1. I love my circular needles. They are bamboo but the cord is very flexible and does not tangle and twist. They are Knitter's Pride Dreamz. Here is the amazon link for them: http://www.amazon.com/Knitters-Pride-Dreamz-Interchangeable-Knitting/dp/B006H7QXMO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391100700&sr=8-1&keywords=knitter%27s+pride.

  2. Phooey, that didn't come up as a clickable link. If you go to amazon.com, just type in Knitter's Pride Dreamz Interchangeable knitting needles. I have the regular long-tipped needle set as well as the short tip set. I really like them. Oh, and I also love Quinco & Co. yarn. I love the Dogwood color you chose!

    1. Thanks! I will take a look at the needles you suggested. I do like the idea of interchangeable needles.

  3. I love the in threes pattern. It's so easy to do that I keep making them. LOL. I use bamboo circulars but also have some rosewood ones. My granddaughter prefers to use the aluminum ones. She knits pretty tightly and the stitches slide off the needles easier for her. Good luck. I know you'll enjoy the pattern.

  4. Sounds like you just have a bum cord, don't blame the bamboo needle part. If they are new and fresh out of the package it might take just a little time to get the cord more flexible. Maybe after a few more rows and the weight of your project the cord will relax and be more cooperative. The In Threes pattern is so fun--have a great time (and Easter is still a ways off--a good goal)!

  5. "In threes" was the pattern that finally got me to start a Ravelry page!(which I still use for the library, haven't posted anything, lol) I still need to make it, but have to finish a sweater I'm making for my 4 yr old son. I have actually never wound my balls of yarn like that, will have to give it a go!

  6. I have the in threes pattern somewhere to make for my little one, thank you for the reminder!

I love knit pro needles I use the symfonie wood needles, they are expensive but all yarn seems to just slide off them sometimes too well!

The yarn you have chosen is a gorgeous colour :)

  7. Those colors are beautiful - so soothing. I can just imagine how beautiful and spring-like they will look at Easter. I will have to check out that pattern since everyone seems to agree it is a good one! Not so sure I am ready for something with sleeves yet.

    1. I definitely think you should give the in threes pattern a try. The sleeves are cap...so not really sleeves as you are thinking. They were very simple. You could do it! :)

  8. emily, you make me smile! i am thinking about going back to knitting. i am not very good, but i love the feel of yarn running through my fingers. to your questions on needles. i also have the bamboo circular and found them challenging because of the twist. i started soaking the "cord" in very warm water and drying them straight on a towel. but, if you want to treat yourself, turbo needles are the way to go. the yarn moves so smoothly, they are a dream. love your post and i include your family in my prayers.
