Snow, Snow Everywhere

King of the Hill...does anyone remember playing it as a kid?

Snow, snow everywhere.  We are buried in it.  Earlier this season I had placed a bench under my bird feeder for standing on when I filled it, and it is completely buried. I filled my bird feeder this past weekend, and the top of the bench was level with the snow. With so much snow everywhere it's hard to imagine working my hands into the warm garden soil or walking across the green grass in bare feet. Oh, the lovely days of summer and the tasty garden greens...
After surviving on stored root vegetables all winter long, our ancestors, here in the north, craved the leafy greens of spring. They would harvest the tender, young dandelions that sprouted up everywhere almost as soon as the snow melted. Dandelion greens served with butter, salt, pepper and a splash of vinegar was a staple of our spring diet when I was growing up, and my mother still harvests those bitter greens that sprout up around her yard each spring.  What I wouldn't give for a big bowl of dandelion greens right now!

I hope you all had a great weekend.  Ours was filled with the usual...work on the addition, a little more decluttering, an emergency run for hay, knitting, game playing, feasting on stacks of pancakes, and, of course, Downton Abbey.

My daughter was my photographer again.  She was in the mood for taking photos this past weekend, and she captured a number of great moments.  I had such a laugh when I saw the ones of the cats battling for the coveted spot on top of the snow bank...I just couldn't resist sharing them. If you would like, you can check out my daughter's photography page here.

  1. We are dreaming of spring and summer and all the goodness that comes with it. Unfortunately out my window right now it is snowing and we are headed back into a deep freeze for the rest of the week. Still a little dreaming to do :)

  2. So much snow! You'd think maybe it might be starting to ease off by now, but at least everyone seems to be enjoying it still. Hope Spring comes soon for you though.

    1. I think it has been 6 years since we had this much snow, this late into the season. It's like the winters we used to have when I was a kid.

  3. Your's daughters photographs are beautiful and it looks like everyone was having so much fun. I find it difficult to imagine the heat of summer in winter and visa versa. It's beginning to warm up here there's quite a bit of green sprouting we already have a batch of dandelions growing in our garden, perfect for making stone soup. I do wish that we'd had just a little bit of snow though...last year we had lots...maybe next year.
I hope the rest of the week continues to be as good as your weekend sounded.

    1. Oh, wow...dandelions already?!?! Stone soup...I have heard of it, and have always wondered what was in it. I may have to look up a recipe. ;)

  4. I haven't ever seen cats playing in the snow! So cute. Though our new kitties (house kitties) snuck out to the screen porch today - I think they wanted some fresh air too. Love the photos! Have a great week!

    1. It wasn't too long after these photos were taken that those two kitties were hunkered up in front of the wood stove.

  6. Beautiful photos, you certainly have plenty of snow. Your weekend sounds quite blissful. Not long to wait for those bitter greens I think.
