Summer Sewing for Baby Boy -- The Jon Jon

Thanks to my daughter for capturing the photos of Little #10
Little #10 was in need of summer clothing, and up until now I had been unsuccessful in finding anything suitable for him. Since he suddenly decided it was grand fun to dig in his diaper at nap time, I needed one piece outfits that would not allow for easy diaper access...yes, he even finds his way around onesies.  I thought for sure I would find what I was looking for at a second hand shop or the Goodwill, but I was amazed to find how little there was for baby boys, especially one-piece outfits.  As I was browsing the Internet, I came across this tutorial for making a Jon Jon.  Why didn't I think of that sooner? I started searching for fabrics, and what fun I had!  There certainly was an abundance of cute fabrics for boys!  Michael Miller's prints happened to be on sale, so I loaded my cart with one yard of each of my favorites.

Once I had drafted the pattern, the outfit came together quite quickly. I have three made, and I'm hoping to make a few more.  The Jon Jon's are perfect. The legs are long enough and narrow enough to keep little hands from pulling at the diaper.  Instead of adding snaps at the crotch, I simply sewed it together to eliminate the possibility of pulling the snaps apart.  The cotton fabric is cool for hot summer days, and can easily be layered with a shirt or sweater when the temperatures are a bit chillier...not forgetting to mention, I think they are really cute!

In the past I have found that I sew much less in the summer than I do in the winter, but now that I have a new sewing corner with a window that overlooks my garden and the setting sun, I am drawn to sewing in the evening after the house has settled down, and the Littles have snuggled into their beds.  The breezes blowing in through the open window, the dusky remains of the setting sun, the chirping peepers and thumping partridge heard in the distance create an atmosphere of sweet relaxation.  I'm looking forward to more evenings of sewing this summer.

  1. Love all the fabrics, especially the tractor one! So many cute patterns for girls, it's rare to see cute things for boys. My boys are too big for a Jon Jon now but I'll definitely keep it in mind for future little ones.
Little # 10 is definitely going to be looking cute this summer!

  2. This post came at the perfect time! My little babe, though a bit older than your son, has started the diaper removal phase. We had stopped wearing onesies, but I've had to start wearing them on her again. These are just adorable! Tell your daughter the pictures are great - the first one is especially good.

  8. Very cute, especially as so often the little boys get neglected with sewing. Love his glasses too! And your evenings of sewing sound wonderful, wishing you lots of those.

  9. When my first was little I found a pattern like this at my mom's that she had sewed for my brother. I made a couple for summer and a long leg one and one long leg that I pieced together to look like a two piece vest and pants. It turned out really cute with what I had but your fabric is so cute. Keep sewing them.

  10. Oh he looks so cute. I used to have a similar pattern for hannah when she was a toddler. He favourite had babushka dolls on the fabric.
