The Lovely Hydrangea

The recent frost took with it most of my flowers, in spite of our efforts to cover and protect them with sheets. Sadly, most were just too delicate to withstand the cold temperatures. The flowers are the hardest things for me to see leave, and although, the landscape is now splashed with a breath-taking array of crimson, orange, and yellow, I do miss the flowers and the delicate beauty they add to the yard.  One flower, however, is at its height of beauty, the hydrangea.  Over the past weeks, their lovely white blossoms have turned to the most exquisite shade of pink, giving them a time-worn, vintage look.  Someday, I would love have a room inspired by the colors of the September hydrangea. The dainty greens, soft pinks, beige, and antique white are so delicate and graceful...the perfect colors for a winter quilting project, possibly.  The crafty options are endless when inspired by the lovely colors of the hydrangea, but my favorite thing about the hydrangea flowers? I can bring them in the house, simply cut into a vase with no water, and they will remain as beautiful as the day I picked them all winter long. Such gifts of beauty to those of us who are sad to see the flowers of summer take their bow.

  1. I love hydrangeas here too, so beautiful. And gorgeous right at the start of Summer too I find. You're right on the inspiration for decorating or quilting too, both would be beautiful.

  2. Oh how lovely. I bought a white hydrangea just before we moved here. It's still in a pot but like you Emily, this week I saw it change from delicate creamy white and green to soft pink. They are so beautiful. It would definitely be the perfect inspiration for any project.
