First Snow

I have missed you all!  I'm sorry for my absence, but I have found it almost impossible to find the time to sit down and work on my blog. I decided last week to give the Littles a week off from their school lessons and allow myself some time to catch up on the mountain of things that I put off during our very busy soccer season. Many of the Littles were still waiting for me to pull their fall/winter clothing out of storage; actually, I had to pull mine out as well.  A few bedrooms needed cleaning and organizing (Oh, what a job that was!), and two out-of-state trips to the Children's Hosptial with Little #6 were made.  The yard and garden needed last bit tidying up before winter. I don't think we could have cut it any closer as we were raking up the last bit of leaves and tilling the garden only hours before wintry weather was upon us. A daunting pile of papers was finally filed, phone calls made, bills paid, and appointments were scheduled and rescheduled. It's amazing how quickly the little things add up when not attended to each day.

In addition to the many things that I wanted to catch up on, I felt a bit (okay, maybe more than a bit) discouraged, wondering if I could actually keep up with my blog.  I've enjoyed this little space I call my own, this little diary of our life on the farm.  I love being able to look back at our lives over the past year and have pictures and writings of the simple things that I normally might not have remembered or recorded.  I also have truly appreciated the opportunity to "meet" others from all over the world and cultivate friendships with those I may never have met if it wasn't for the lovely little niche of bloggers that I have found and connected with through blogging.  I have been discouraged about the amount of time, or rather the lack of time, that I have had for blogging.  My content is lacking because I don't feel that I have material that is interesting enough to share.  I feel that I have just been scurrying to keep up with everyday chores...dishes, meals, errands, dirty diapers, laundry...all, of which, are not very interesting.  In addition, the youngest Littles have been doing a great job keeping their mama on her toes. We have a two, a three, and a four year old all who seem to be in the throes of the terrible twos...one just coming into it, and one that has been there a while and doesn't want to leave.  I actually had considered giving up on my blog, but the thought made me so very sad.  I just couldn't walk away from it.  I wanted to stay connected to the friends I have made, so I've decided to keep writing, but taking it slowly, not pressuring myself to write on a schedule and allowing myself to be okay with fewer pictures or less words, remembering that simple is okay.  I'm hoping with time we will get caught up here on the farm and fall back into a healthy rhythm (and maybe my four year old will decide he is too old be stuck in the terrible twos).

So, now that I have shared all of this with you (I wasn't planning on doing so), I want to get back to the original intent of this post.  Sunday morning we woke to unseasonably wintery weather, our first snow storm of the season. Much hustling had been done the day before in preparation of the storm, so I was quite content to snuggle in next to the wood stove and take the first day off we have had in many weeks. I hadn't done much knitting since spring, except for the occasional row or two on the Little Bud's sweater.  I needed something fresh to work on, and this cabled headband for Little #2 was just the ticket.  I'm looking forward to catching up and enjoying more peaceful days in front of the fire with a knittig project in hand.

  1. Keep writing, when you can. RSS readers make it so your readers can see any time you post, and not worry about waiting in between. I'm always happy to see you've got something new up -- and it's lovely to know that you're a human who can be swamped by the needs of little people, just like me. :-)

  2. Just come when you can! I love reading your homey blog, but I realize how busy you must be! Please don't feel any pressure. Just write from your heart about your family, home, projects and garden. Keeping it "real" is what I love the best about your blog!

  3. So glad you are keeping the blog! No matter how little you are able to blog, I still enjoy it whenever you can. You have a beautiful family and it is terrific to watch how you cope, and they all grow. Also love your home!

  4. Write when you can! I keep a personal journal myself on paper and pen and I feel bad when I forget to write something down but isn't the point to write and share your happiness, thoughts and chores as only best we can? I loved looking back already from when I started gardening last Fall! I hope to keep a journal at least to the point when I can buy my own home and little farm :) and its a pleasure reading your blog!! It's nice to know what other people are up too, even the little things :)

  5. We love to hear from you whenever you pop in to say hello and share what you are up to. Even the most everyday chores are nice to share with those who can relate with you. No pressure, there is enough of that in raising a large family.

  6. Well, our household is now in the throes of our annual snow-envy, haha! My blog has suffered, too, though more from trying to work blogging around my husband's shifts! My laptop has died and our desktop is in our bedroom, where he currently sleeps most of the day. By midnight, when he is at work, my brain is too fried! Hanna is right. I use bloglovin, it's so nice to just check it and see who has had time to post! Infrequent posts are just as nice, I think most of us wouldn't necessarily have time to stay caught up if all the blogs we enjoyed were posting daily! I look forward to seeing your finished headband!

  8. I have often wondered how you manage to find the time, with 10 little ones, homeschooling, animals and all the other pulls on your time. I think you do amazingly. I'm finding it tough to make the time at the moment with only 4! But I'm so glad you are carrying on, and it doesn't matter if it's less frequent, or maybe more photos than words or however it works for you. It's just nice to be able to stay in touch.

  9. Given everything you do it's amazing you have time to breathe let alone blog! But the joy of blogging is you can dip in and out as you need - the Internet will wait! And yay for snow, or is that just the perspective of someone who isn't guaranteed to see any this year?

  11. Oh, please don't stop blogging, just catch up when you can...............although how you ever do it with 10 littles, I will never know. See how many of us there are who love the simple life, the gardening, the creating oh hearth and home, the cozy winter activities, and so much more.
Your week off of teaching in order to regain your organization was so brilliant!
We cheer you on! Thank you for sharing your corner of New England.
May your dear family be greatly blessed of the Lord!

  12. Emily I love reading your New England family adventures! Please don't worry about not being interesting, there are plenty of us here that enjoy a peek into someone else's "everyday". You're right about looking back and remembering the simple things you might not recall. So, blog for yourself, when you can. xx

  13. I've just seen this - please don't stop blogging! I know it's a struggle to find time, I have the same problem, but we make time for the things we enjoy and somehow or other I find time to post, although less frequently than I did when I started blogging. I would say that what might seem boring to you (domestic, everyday things perhaps) is fascinating to me as I love to see how others live in different parts of the world. While our lives might be quite similar on the surface (both women, both mothers, both English speakers etc) I love how different your New England rhythms and traditions are to my British ones.

Also - I can't believe you had snow already! x
