"Think Spring" Quilt

With snow continuing to pile up around us and temperatures still barely climbing out of the single digits I needed to do something that would remind me of spring.  What could be more airy and spring-like than a pile of vintage sheets? I have countless ideas for my ever-growing pile of vintage sheets swirling around in my head, and I decided now was the perfect time to pull out the sheets and immerse myself in the cheerful colors of spring by making a quilt.  I chose to do a coin quilt design, alternating between colored and white blocks.  I used a thrifted, cotton sheet for the white strips and blocks. A thin, cotton bedspread will be used in place of the batting, and another vintage rosebud sheet will be used for the backing.  As I have mentioned before, I love using recycled materials in my quilts, and after reading this blog post, I'm even more motivated to get creative and use what is taking up space in my house.   This quilt has been such a joy to work on...the pretty little squares put such a smile on my face, and I dream of the nights that we no longer need the heavy down comforter, but can sleep comfortably under my new spring quilt.

Have you been doing anything to help remind yourself that winter doesn't last forever?  I'd love to have you share or leave a link in the comments about any "think spring" projects you may be working on.  Have a great day!

  1. What a lovely post Emily. Those vintage sheets are so jolly and happy and definitely conjure up images of spring days. They look good with your nice fresh green page colour (is it new?) and I really like the contrast of the white. I'm afraid that all my projects are decorating related but as soon as I have something appropriate, I'll link back to your post.

I can't wait to see the finished quilt. Happy sewing days.

    1. Thanks so much, Debby, for your sweet comment. The colors in the sheets just make me smile. I just finished reading your most recent post, and I love how you mentioned the "whispers" of spring...definitely something to look forward to. :)
Is my page background showing up as green? I haven't changed it...mmmmm...odd.

    2. The immediate background is white but then the outer one is a lovely sage green. Probably I've just not noticed it before. It could be that the lovely colours in your sheets contrast so it made me more aware of it. It all looks lovely.

I hopt that you hear some whispers of spring very shortly.
      Happy days.

  3. Hi Emily, I just found your lovely blog after you linked to mine. Thankyou:) I absolutely adore your quilt. I love seeing quilts made from old fabrics, because of course that is the whole MEANING of a patchwork quilt, isn't it? I have two half-made quilts stashed in a cupboard, both made from thrifted fabrics.. I just need a little push to finish them. I have never actually ever finished a quilt... but I have high hopes:)
The actual address for my blog is www.alltheblueday.blogspot.com.au - if you go the the .co.uk address it is fairly unreadable: in fact, I didn't even know it existed - how does that even happen? Technology, huh!
I have been enjoying reading about your gorgeous family in your farmhouse which looks so snug and cosy. Hope you get some lovely spring weather happening soon. Although wishing for spring for you is wishing summer away for me. I'm not sure I am that benevolent!

  4. Your quilt is looking lovely, how wonderful that you are using vintage bedding to make it. Repurposing is a satisfying activity, I have been doing a bit myself recently too. ;)

  5. I'm doing the same thing! The linen section is my favorite area to visit in thrift shops!
